Does anyone know anything on the molecular about Levonorgestrel? ? I am doing a power point on Levonorgestrel, a birth control ingredient. I need to know as much as i can get on it. Basically the cellular level, which cells are involved and the path ways the cell uses?

hogwaump replied: "You can read the information provided to physicians here: Mirena is a particular brand and implementation technique, but the pharmacology would be the same. Skip to page 6 to get to the pharmacology and pharmacokinetics sections. You will find there a number of speculations on how it works, but little in the way of hard facts, but it is the best information available at this time. A search of scientific publications turns up nothing but the studies sponsored by the manufacturers."

I have been taking birth control pills for 3 days. Can I switch over to another pill tommorow ?Will it work? I have been breaking out in hives tonight and I think it is my birth control pill.I have another pack w/ the same active ingredients(levonorgestrel and ethinyl esradiol).I took my third one in the pack tonight. If I take the 4th pill in my other pack tommorow and started back on those would that be effective?Since it is still early in the pack I was hoping it might be OK.

jamers replied: "I think you are supposed to wait 7 days before starting new pills... That depends though. Call a planned parenthood and find out. They will need to know what pills you are using now and what pills you will be switching to."

just curious replied: "Your best bet would be to stop taking the pills and call a doctor as soon as possible, the hives may be an early warning sign for a more serious allergic reaction. Have you ruled out everything else, maybe they aren't whats giving you hives. Starting a new pack would probably be just as effective, but if the two packs have the same ingredients then the new one might be just as bad."

considering birth control: are levonorgestrel and norgestrel equal mg for mg? i'm comparing active ingredients. can levonorgestrel and norgestrel mg for mg be compared? like.... 0.3mg levonorgestrel theraputically equivalent to 0.3mg norgestrel? thanks

Erika G replied: "No, actually, they can't. Just as there are many different antibiotics, but all work against bacterial infections, different progestins (synthetic progesterones) also work differently, and so you have to compare their androgenic and progesterone activity, which involves mathematics that I admit, I don't understand in order to calculate how they actually function on various systems. If only it were so easy. :P I like the charts at the website WDX Cyber, which lists a variety of pills and what their progestins are, and what their activity is, and what pills might be best to mitigate what side effects. Good luck finding a pill that works for you."
